Jill Nagy, an expert in Americans with Disabilities Act Law and compliance, will give an update of various issues surrounding ADA and transportation - including updates on impacts of new bus shelter / stop regulations, new cases involving violations and standards for shared ride services, and a general refresher for hot topics in ADA enforcement actions.

 

Chris Zeilinger Presents: Planning for Professional Development, Transition and Continuity: How to Prepare for Future Success - 9 AM - 5 PM

Note- this training is limited to the first 25 registrants, and must be registered separately for on the Winter Series registration form. Only 1 registrant per organization will be permitted until after January 10 (additional registrants can be waitlisted).

You know things never stay the same. Key personnel in your organization may change, your leadership may change, your community’s always changing in one way or another, the transit organization itself may be changing in terms of budget or operations, or maybe you’re even looking at upcoming changes in your own career. As the manager of a locally operated transit system, though, you know that your customers and stakeholders want to count on a reliable transit service that will continue to deliver them to the places they need to be in life, regardless of what may be changing around their transit system. You can plan for these things, successfully.

In this one-day on-line class, we will help you identify the types of risks and opportunities lying ahead or lurking around the corner, will outline the strategies that help you and your transit organization respond to these risks and opportunities, and will take you through the steps of some action-oriented planning that will leave you with a framework you can use to plan for your specific organizational circumstances. To make the experience real and meaningful for you, we will draw on a variety of case study examples your peers around the country have faced, together with what you and your colleagues choose to share in the class.

Kelly Shawn Presents: Policies and Procedures - 9 AM - Noon

This 3-hour session will focus on the process of identifying the need for new policies and procedures, development of those policies, and evaluating existing policies and procedures for effectiveness without being overly prescriptive. Over the years, a transit system changes, but are existing policies and procedures changing as well? This intensive will provide participants manageable solutions and techniques in developing sustainable policies that allow the transit system to effectively manage its operations while also meeting Federal and State requirements and the changing demands of its ridership.

Participants will gain an understanding of triggers that would require modifications of existing policies or development of new policies. A systematic approach to policy development may require investigation, data collection, strategic planning and involvement of staff who may be impacted by changes to existing policies or new policies. Participants will gain tips on policy changes that may affect their ridership. A seemingly simple change in service, hours or fares can end up being a public relations nightmare. Learning best practices to effective policy management will assist transit leaders when the time comes to make minimal or drastic policy changes.

MDOT MTA Presents: Useful Life Benchmarks and Transit Employee Assault Reporting Requirement - 9 AM - 11 AM

Presenters from MDOT MTA will cover useful life benchmarks, which are the expected life cycle or the acceptable period of use in service for a capital asset, as determined by a transit provider, or the default benchmark provided by FTA. Also covered during this session will be The Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) new General Directive to address the significant and continuing national-level safety risk related to assaults on transit workers. The General Directive requires each transit agency subject to FTA's Public Transportation Agency Safety Plans (PTASP) Final Rule to conduct a safety risk assessment, identify safety risk mitigations or strategies, and provide information to FTA on how it is assessing, mitigating, and monitoring the safety risk associated with assaults on transit workers. Each transit agency serving a large urbanized area must involve the joint labor-management Safety Committee when identifying safety risk mitigations.
